"understanding through education"

Sgt. Kirk H. Sanders

The purpose of the Southwick Police Department Citizen's Police Academy is to give members of the community an opportunity to learn more about their police department.

The academy is a nine week educational program designed to give students a realistic understanding of police work. The instruction will include lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises. Participants will  be allowed to ride along in a cruiser during routine tour of duty.

Most classes are instructed by members of the Southwick Police Department. We believe that an informed public and supportive community are the core of our success as a police department.

We would like to minimize the public's suspicion and fears of the police. We intend to achieve a higher level of  "Understanding through Education".

Classes include Use of Force, Patrol Procedures, Criminal Law and  the Justice System, Dive & Recovery, Marine & Recreational Law Enforcement, Safety & Dare Programs, Drug Identification as well as a day at the firing range and a K-9 Demonstration. The ninth week will include a Closing Ceremony and Graduation.

New classes held spring and fall. Information and applications will be available at the Southwick Police Department.

*** Next Class will be held Fall of 2008***
